I have been to the Hotel Costes several times and attempted to go to the Hotel Costes more times to count and, having given the matter some thought, have decided it probably isn’t worth the effort. If you are in town to see and be seen – and by that I mean are a 6′ model, playboy or total wannabe, Hotel Costes is probably the place to hit up on a night.
I have been invited before for dinner and managed to avoid the queue for tables, pleading with the hostess for a table even though you need to be on the list and it was very lovely once seated and given a cocktail. So, a tip from the outset would be that if you want to play with that crowd and don’t own your own fashion label you probably need to pay the extreme prices to stay at the hotel in order to make it past the clipboard nazis who hold the keys to getting a table in either the restaurant or bar there.
If you do manage to get through the barricade, the central outdoor coutyard is the place to be. Full of chic Parisians, the fashion and music crowd as well as a few celebs dotted around for good measure (Gwyneth Paltrow and Stella McCartney were there last time I popped in), it is popular because you can smoke there and most Parisians still smoke, and because when the weather is lovely, it is a fabulous place to enjoy a coffee while people watching. Lunch will set you back 40 euros a head and dinner substantially more so if you do fancy getting in the mosh pit to enjoy the Costes experience, book ahead, save up and get some new clothes so you don’t just feel incredibly out of place. Perhaps pop to Colette, just down the road, before you head there so you feel a million dollars – before you end up spending it.
