My first memory of New York is being taken to The Mercer Kitchen when my friend and I were backpacking around America aged 18. My first time in the city and definitely in a place like this, we were staying with an equally wide-eyed, albeit older friend of a friend who was on placement at a US bank and wanted to flash the cash. It was fabulous – the people were all dressed to the nines, the decor was minimal and sleek, the lighting just so and today on going back – it is exactly the same. The clientele are still de rigeur, the minimalist tables are still in keeping with the Greenwich Village locale and the cocktails still delicious. It is also still ridiculously expensive, but for a special treat, it is worth it.
Have a drink in the bar upstairs before heading down to the restaurant where the tiger prawn salad is to die for and the fries come in a flower pot.
